Dr. Boado is Professor of Medicine and member of the Brain Research Institute at UCLA. Dr. Boado received a Ph.D. degree in biochemistry from the School of Pharmacy and Biochemistry, University of Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1982. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in endocrinology at the Center for Nuclear Medicine at the University of Buenos Aires, and conducted research as Established Investigator in the same Institution for two years. In 1985, Dr. Boado came to the UCLA School of Medicine as an international fellow through the Fogarty International Center of the NIH, and he was appointed as a Visiting Assistant Research Endocrinologist in the Department of Medicine in 1988. Dr. Boado was appointed Assistant Professor of Medicine at UCLA in 1991, Associated Professor in 1997 and promoted to Professor of Medicine in 2001. He is member of the Endocrine Society (USA), The Society for Neurosciences (USA), The Controlled Release Society, and The European Neuroscience Association.
Dr. Boado is the author of more than 130 scientific journal articles and book chapters in his field. Dr. Boado was recently awarded with The Journal of Experimental Biology Lecture, which was presented at the Cerebral Vascular Biology Conference at the Cambridge King’s College in Cambridge, UK. Dr. Boado have served in numerous scientific review committees of scientific journals and national and international granting organizations including the US Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation. Dr. Boado's research program is devoted to investigating the molecular biology and pharmacology of the brain microvasculature, which makes the blood-brain barrier in vivo. He is studying the molecular mechanisms of gene expression and genomics of blood-brain barrier genes in both physiological and pathological conditions including brain tumors. A second area of interest is the design of novel gene and antisense-based therapeutics, and delivery systems for the brain. Dr. Boado is co-inventor of the US and European Patent entitled “Drug delivery of antisense oliogonucleotides and peptides to tissues in vivo and to cells in vitro using avidin-biotin technology.” Dr. Boado’s research program is supported by multiple national and international organizations including the National Institutes of Health.
