Diabetic Retinopathy (Retinal damage)

  • Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness among working-age adults in the U.S.
  • Early detection can greatly reduce the risk of vision loss and blindness. There are usually no symptoms of early retinal damage.
  • Current modes of treatment focus on preservation of vision rather than restoration of lost vision.

Screening for Retinopathy

  • A photograph will be taken of your eyes to screen for diabetic retinopathy. The images will be sent to the UCLA Jules Stein Eye Institute for review and recommendations for management will be made.
  • If you have no evidence of diabetic retinopathy you should continue to have an annual screen. If you have evidence of retinal damage an appropriate follow-up appointment will be made.
  • This retinal photo does not replace a comprehensive eye examination. A complete evaluation for overall visual function and health is recommended for the detection of glaucoma, cataracts, and other eye diseases.
  • Physician Referral- Physicians may refer patients for this exam using this form.
