The
Gonda (Goldschmied) Diabetes Center is a multi-disciplinary state-of-the-art
facility offering high quality care for patients with diabetes and any other
endocrine disorder. The Gonda Diabetes Center was founded in May 2000 with a
generous endowment from the Gonda family.
Our
Mission:
q To
provide outstanding clinical care of patients with diabetes mellitus
q To
educate patients, the public and members of the healthcare profession about
diabetes
q To
advance understanding of diabetes by the conduct of high quality research

The Gonda Diabetes Center
provides both primary and consultative diabetes care to referred patients. The
Center also incorporates a key clinical research program to investigate the
pathophysiology, prevention, and cure of diabetes and its complications. Adult patients with both type 1 and type 2
diabetes are seen in the clinic and family members are considered an integral
part of the care process. UCLA faculty
physicians, nurses, technicians and educators provide patient care services at
the Center, while also providing training to fellows and residents
participating in educational and research activities. In particular, we are
tightly integrated with the Gonda (Goldschmied) Vascular
Center and provide the latest capability in vascular imaging and care for the
frequent patient with diabetes and vascular disease. The Gonda Diabetes Center
also works closely with other UCLA physicians skilled in the diagnosis and
treatment of diabetic complications, creating a large, multidisciplinary
network. We have experts from
Cardiology and Nephrology to provide experience and leadership in the treatment
of dyslipidemia, hypertension, and related cardiovascular and renal diseases. We are also integrating our services with
those of pediatric endocrinology, in an effort to provide translational care
for adolescents with diabetes. The Center’s areas of specialization
include customized diabetic therapy, diabetes education, continuous infusion
insulin pumps, and distinguishing type 1 from type 2 diabetes.
In addition to several physicians who are experienced in the treatment of
diabetes, the Gonda Diabetes Center also has a certified diabetes nurse
educator and a dietician who coordinate educational sessions for
patients. There are four such sessions each month, with both daytime and
evening times.
The Gonda Diabetes Center
has its own DEXA (Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry) bone densitometer, which is
used to measure bone mineral density and
determine whether or not a person has osteoporosis or osteopenia.
Osteoporosis carries a significant risk of fracture of the spine, hip, or other
bones, even with minimal trauma.
We also have a retinal
camera in the Gonda Diabetes Center to screen patients for retinal damage (diabetic retinopathy), a complication of diabetes
mellitus. Click here for more information.
Other services offered at
the Gonda Diabetes Center include ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, DEXA
body composition analysis, thyroid ultrasound and nerve conduction
studies. Click here to access the online
procedure requisition form.
