Dr. Georgia completed her undergraduate studies at Stanford University and her PhD studies at UCLA.  As a developmental biologist, she is interested in how the beta cells arise from stem cells.  She is interested in the ways that beta cells increase in number in different developmental contexts, including fetal development, postnatal development, and in adulthood. Specifically, she is interested in the cellular mechanisms that restrict or promote beta cell replication.  She is also interested in how DNA damage may restrict the ability of beta cells to replicate and expand in number.  The work from the laboratory will contribute to developing cell replacement therapies for treating diabetes.
