Dr. Matveyenko received his Ph.D. from the University of Southern California followed by postdoctoral fellowship at the Larry Hillblom Islet research Center at University of California, Los Angeles.  Dr. Matveyenko’s primary research goals are to gain insights into molecular and physiological mechanisms underlying the loss of beta-cell mass and function in Type 2 diabetes.  Specifically his current research is focused on 1) elucidating the mechanisms by which disruptions in circadian rhythms influences beta-cell turnover, function and susceptibility to Type 2 diabetes and 2) understanding the role of beta-cell melatonin signaling in regulation of beta-cell survival and function. To accomplish these research goals the laboratory uses an integrative approach ranging from cellular and molecular level studies to in-vivo physiology in genetic rodent models.
